• Jackie – so graceful and elegant

I felt swamped by so many different impressions when I visited Salone del Mobile this year. Some of my personal highlights made it already in my blog, but my odds-on favourite is coming today.

I’m pleased to introduce JACKIE, a chair designed by Stefano Grassi and distributed by Colico – another extraordinary design from Italy.

For me JACKIE is possibly the most graceful and elegant chair I have ever seen. You want to know why I’m that fascinated? Because to me the quality and the minimalistic look of this chair absolutely stands out. Designed with a focus of the basic essentials of a chair plus the detail and execution making it very special to me.

It’s elegant frame is produced in steel and varnished in rose gold and the seat is upholstered in beautiful sand beige leather (black color is available as well).

Absolutely delicate and definately an outstanding chair which stuck in my mind.

Read more about my personal highlights which I picked out for you in the coming weeks. Believe me there are still many gems to come.

  • About Apes, People and Owls

The ceramic works of the italien company Bosa are decorative, unique, colorful and with the right sense of humor. Their repertoire of forms and figures is widely spread. I have never seen such fine ceramics produced in this quality and so narrative. Wow- truly outstanding craftsmanship!

The Venetian workshop Bosa was founded in 1976 and creates hand-made objects and accessoires mainly in collaboration with international designers.

    Primates by Bosa

Look at the majestic series of the apes (collection „Primates“) designed by Elena Salmistraro, I absolutely love them! Each piece looks like the king of the dschungel to me. This gorgeous collection includes vases, wall sculptures and plates.

Elena Salmistraro also designed a series of ceramic figures called „Most Illustrious“ as a triute to italian design masters and people who inspired her. Every piece captures not just the characteristica of each individual but also their design work. Truly Amazing!

Manolo Bossi created for all the owl fans amongst us an entire collection of beautiful and mysterious figurines (collection„The Owls“) They are not just elegant and wise looking but also serve as little containers for your precious things. Definately one of my favourites.

The Owls by BosaBut this is just a small selection and there are many more to dicover. Check out Bosa’s homepage and discover. https://www.bosatrade.com

  • A synthesis of beauty and sustainability

I think during the last weeks and months you will probably have noticed from the furniture I have talked about that I have a passion for simple and elegant shapes. Today I have picked out for you the KUAN chair which follows the same design principals. I discovered the chair at the Ilpo SRL booth in Salone del Mobile where it was displayed in an expressive red and black combination which I really liked.

The German company SMV Sitz- und Objekmöbel GmbH is distributing this stylish and sustainably produced lounge chair which is also 100% vegan. SMV’s renunciation of the use of animal products is a key element to the company and a significant step forwards in our ethical future. The chair is available in a huge range of animal free upholstery fabrics, for example, cork which offers a great alternative to leather.

Frank Chou is the talented young Beijing designer responsible for the extraordinary KUAN chair. His works have already attracted a lot of attention and he and his team have created elegant and long-lasting contemporary design pieces for several renown companies and global design brands. Industry organisations and media groups both in China and abroad have nominated him as „Designer of the Year“ and he was the first Chinese designer to win the „Salone Satellite Special Mention Design Award“ in 2016.

I’m not surprised that on the basis of criteria such as ecological compatibility, level of innovation and design quality the KUAN chair won the 2017 ICONIC Award in the category Interior Innovation.

For me, the chair is definitely a great example of the synthesis of beauty and sustainability in furniture design.

  • Small, smart and beautiful work desk

I think everybody can appreciate the problem of how to store and hide documents and working utensils. The smart and beautiful work desk from TOLIX, called the Bureau Clapet, has been created to solve that exact issue.

It is small in size which allows it to integrate easily into even small spaces. A hole for cables makes it very practical for computer work, but it also works just as well as a make up table.

The Bureau Clapet is available in different finishes and in a large variety of colours from the TOLIX ® ESSENTIELS, TENDANCES and BRUT VERNIS color charts. At Salone del Mobile I saw it in an extravagant Aubergine with a matt finish which I loved.

I’m a bit sad that I only discovered this lovely desk after I had already bought another for myself last year, but at least I have discovered it in time to share with you and maybe it is exactly the desk you are looking for to store all those annoying papers and stuff.

    Material: Steel | Dimensions: 105 cm length x 57 cm width x 75 cm hight | Weight: 21 KG | Price: ca. 936,00€ incl. taxes | Available: https://www.tolix.de

  • Finally it’s summer with this Summer chair

Isn’t it great when the summer season begins and you find an extraordinary chair you really want to sit on? Well, I did. After a long search I have finally found a chair that would be perfect for our balcony.

Appropriately it’s called ‘Summer’ and it’s made by the Italian company SCAB Design from a design by Roberto Semprini.

‘Summer’ is available in three versions; with or without armrests or as a bar stool. It’s produced in powder-coated tubular steel and available in a range of colours including white, anthracite, dove gray, brick red, linden green, light blue.

Its pure and sleek design is absolutely appealing, I particularly like the anthracite and gold version without the armrests. As well as being extremely elegant the chair is very practical as it is lightweight and stackable and would suit both indoor and outdoor use (apart from the gold version, it’s just for indoor use).

At Salone del Mobile 2018 SCAB Design presented four indoor and outdoor seating collections manufactured in Italy and inspired by the legendary 50’s and 60’s. These were all created in collaboration with handpicked Italian designers, one of whom is Roberto Semprini who designed the ‘Summer’ chair and who is known, among other things, for Tatlin, a spectacular spiral sofa.

I’m so happy to have discovered this company at the fair as I thought my search for the perfect balcony chair would never end. Now summer can come with those beautiful, airy ‘Summer’ chairs.

  • A puristic bench inspired by Japanese culture

Today I would like to introduce some more beautiful furniture: Torii – a bench produced by Viccarbe and designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. It’s simplicity and pure beauty has kept me thrilled ever since seeing it during Salone del Mobile 2018 in Milan.

The brand new Torii bench is defined by it’s multi functionality. It can be set to the same height as a chair, which means it can be used as a desk or other table and, of course, it can be placed in collaborative spaces. Colours, upholstery and electrics are available in several options. I’m smitten by the lovely colour combination which they presented at the fair (seen in the above picture.)

The famous designer couple, Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, took their inspiration from traditional Japanese culture and designed Torii in reference to the arches normally found at the entrance to Shinto shrines and which embody the frontier between earthly and sacred matters.

The furniture Viccarbe presented at Salone del Mobile all have one thing in common, carefully designed with the highest standards in partnership with the most prestigious international designers they are all suited to a pure, timeless and contemporary lifestyle.

For me they were a definite highlight of the fair and new favorite bench.

  • A shelf to express yourself

Some weeks have past already since Salone del Mobile 2018 in Milan Italy, but still there are so many brands and products I want to tell you about.

Have you ever heared of the Danish company Montana? I am pretty sure you’ve seen some of their furniture without knowing.

Since 1982 Montana is producing different storage systems which are known for their simplicity, functionality and high standards – all manufactured in Denmark. The company has been founded by Peter J. Lassen who worked from the beginning closely with designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzen, Piet Hein and Verner Panton.

Lassens vision was not just to create furniture but also add his values such as freedom, flexibility and creativity to his designs. He invented different modular systems which allows customers to play around and add their individual touch.

Montana is represented in numerous leading furniture shops in Europe and is starting now to go global. I think customers worldwide appreciate their modular systems to organize personal belongings and the flexibility in the design.

At Salone del Mobile 2018 they have presented themselves with an outstanding booth painted in various shades of red and storage systems reaching right up to the ceiling.

The brandnew shelving concept „Montana Free“, which they launched at Salone del Mobile blew my mind – especially the version in China Red.

„Montana Free“ is a minimalistic and elegant airy shelving solution which seems to be not just solid but also long lasting. It is designed by one of the most respected Danish designers Jakob Wagner. His designs are renowned and have been exhibited worldwide.

The shelf offers endless opportunities to express your personality like a big open canvas. You can choose between 12 different standard compositions which will help to solve several room circumstances. The smallest version is a two-shelf-high bench and the biggest a six-shelf-high shelf depending on your needs. It is easy to assemble and mobile which brings a big application spectrum.

It consists of lacquered MDF shelves in depth 38 cm divided by tubes emphasizing the horizontal shelves. The shelves and the tubes are available in four lacquer colours: New White, Fjord, China Red and Black. The panels feature the textile Remix 2 from Kvadrat and are available in the following colours: Purple, Stone, Grey, Natural, Rust, Lilac, Nude and Mustard.

Great work: “The shelving system has all the marks of Montana’s unique DNA and the high quality you would expect. Made by Montana. Interpreted by you.”

    Price range: 501,00€ – 2.076,00€. Panels 93,00€ (Germany)

  • Elegance, lightness & impressiv craftsmanship – combined in one chair

During my visit to Salone del Mobile 2018 I strolled through many impressive booths but the chair series called Igman designed by Harri Koskinen for Zanat especially caught my eye.

Even from a distance I could sense the quality and character of the chairs. The matt wooden frame and the removeable soft saddle leather seat and backrest appeared elegant and unbiased to me. The additional hand carved details on the flat cut surfaces of the armrests and back beam completed the stylish and modern look.

Harri Koskinen, the highly renown Finish designer who has already worked for such brands as Alessi, Artek, Issey Miyake Inc, Muji and Iittala created the Igman series along with others for Zanat.

After my initial attraction to this lovely furniture I wanted to learn more about Zanat’s touching family history. They only launched as a brand in 2015 but their roots begin more than a century ago when the great grandfather of Zanat’s founders learned a wood carving technique from pioneer wood carver entrepreneurs. These skills were passed down to his sons and and influenced several other furniture workshops in the peacetime period between the First and Second World Wars. And so it came to be that Konjic, the Bosnian hometown of Zanat, became a popular centre for hand carved furniture and local hardwood decorative objects.

But this was not without its challenges. The World Wars, the advent of socialism and a series of wars thereafter forced the woodcarvers to close their businesses in 1995. Luckily, they always believed in their craft and restarted and continued their work whenever conditions allowed.

Zanat’s foundation is based on a legacy that has spanned more than four generations. With the aim to use old craftsmanship to show how traditional handcraving techniques can seamlessly blend with modern design they are opening new possibilities and contributing to sustainable socioeconomic development.

The specific heirloom woodcarving technique from Konjic practised by Zanat was inscribed into the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 6, 2017. Now, at a time when Bosnia is suffering one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe, Zanat is creating opportunities, hiring and training young people and breathing a new life into this UNESCO listed hand-carving technique.

The Igman Dining chair and the companion Lounge chair and Ottoman are definitely three of my favourite pieces from the whole faire and have remained on my mind and on my own apartment wishlist ever since.

  • Snow White – The most spectacular sofa I know

For all the design lovers out there, I am very excited to finally write about my very first ‚pick‘, the „Coronum three Seater“ –  designed by Artefatto Design Studio for Scarlet Splendour.
The luxury brand Scarlet Splendour launched an eclectic and opulent series of furniture & accessories at Salone del Mobile 2018. When entering their bracing different and truly inspiring booth at the worlds leading furniture fair in Milano last Saturday I felt very welcomed.

Scarlet Splendour (based in Kolkata, India) introduced a fancy and slightly surrealistic range of chairs, coffee tables, cabinets, sofas and living accessories which have been developed in collaboration with several international designers.

Atmospheric lights and the lovely rouge-colored wall surrounded the most spectacular sofa I’ve ever seen. A truly amazing and cosy white dream called „Coronom Three Seater“ which is part of the Snow White collection by Artefatto. The founders of Artefatto Design Studio (based in London) collaborated with Scarlet Splendour for the very first time and created the unique Snow White collection influenced by Greek and Latin heritage which gently merges the boundaries between art, design and luxury fashion. A charming and alluring interior range crafted using the finest sheepskin leather and the most elegant golden frames and meant to give the feel of real majestic cosiness.

„This is what it must feel like to be waft away to your own kingdom of clouds and gentle surrealism, within a world, which may no longer be dreamlike. It’s a promise of luxury, beyond imagination.“
